Chapter 4 : The Growth of the Kuru Dynasty

There’s an intriguing backstory to Satyavati, the revered matriarch of the Kuru Dynasty.

Satyavati was born from a fish and raised by the leader of a fishermen group. Due to her unusual origin, she carried a fishy odor. One day, the sage Parashara visited and was greatly impressed by Satyavati’s service. He offered her a boon as a reward. Satyavati requested that the fishy smell be replaced with a sweet fragrance. Not only did Parashara grant this request, but he also blessed her with a son who would be vigorous and strong-willed.

This son was named Krishna Dwaipayana, as he was born on an island (Dwaipayana) and had a dark complexion (Krishna means dark). He is also known as Ved Vyasa, the sage who organized and categorized the Vedas.

Returning to the story of Shantanu’s sons, Vichitraviriya died without any heirs. Satyavati, desperate for her daughters-in-law to have children, called upon Vyasa to provide offspring.

When Vyasa first approached Ambika, she shut her eyes tightly in fear, refusing to look at him. As a result, Vyasa declared that the son born to Ambika would be blind and named Dhritarashtra.

Next, Vyasa visited Ambalika. Overcome with fear, she turned pale. Vyasa foretold that her son would be pale as well and named him Pandu. Satyavati, disappointed that both grandsons had defects, requested Vyasa to try again for a healthy child.

However, Ambika sent a maid, adorned with ornaments, to meet Vyasa. The maid, remaining indifferent to Vyasa, received a healthy child from him, who was named Vidura.

And so, the future of the Kuru dynasty was set in motion.
